The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft has plans to produce a 7” tablet device. The device is a response to the popularity of smaller Android based tablets and the iPad mini. The problem is, unless they plan to introduce an entirely new operating system, a smaller tablet device will be an unmitigated disaster.
Not content to only lose sales on it’s own platform, Microsoft is determined to avoid making any money off users of competing platforms as well. ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley has the details.

I really do love my iPhone. I’d also be lying if I said I’m not interested in trying out some of the other smartphone platforms. It’s not because I’m unhappy with iOS, but rather that I just love geeky stuff. Unfortunately, not being independently wealthy, this isn’t possible.
Lex Friedman recently used Windows Phone for a month and has written about it at Macworld. I enjoyed reading about his experience and am very much looking forward to some future improvements to my beloved iOS.

John Gruber has collected a nice roundup of Microsoft Surface Pro reviews at Daring Fireball. Many of them use the "C" word when describing some aspect of the product. It was always obvious to anyone not completely sucked into Microsoft's marketing speak, but every design has compromises. A good design balances compromise with advantage.
In my opinion, the Surface products are not good designs.

Ken Segall, a former advertising executive behind many of Apple's best work, has an interesting piece on his blog discussing Microsoft's marketing decisions with the Surface. It's an interesting read. He's not a fan to say the least.
